Pittsburgh Grotto Picnic at Laurel Caverns

Saturday, September 6, 2008/ Sunday, September 7, 2008

This is the annual Pittsburgh Grotto picnic. Camp, explore the Laurel Highlands area, tour Laurel Caverns and the Geological Park, meet new and old cavers, do a local cave, eat/drink and be merry.

The picnic is now a pot luck affair. Please bring a covered dish to share. You may cook your own burgers, dogs, etc. BYOB.  Folding tables for food and drink, as well as coolers stuffed with ice are especially needed. And don't forget to bring a chair.

A special ceremony to commemorate Frank Mielcarek, including the interment of his ashes, will take place at 5:00 PM on Saturday September 6th. Frank Mielcarek was an early and active member of the Pittsburgh Grotto. He passed on March 10, 2006 in a tragic house fire that also injured his wife, Agnes.

Camping is permitted on the Laurel Caverns property, in a designated area. Many of us arrive Friday late afternoon.

Please bring a food item or covered dish to share.

A rope may be rigged for vertical practice. If you have vertical caving gear, but haven't used it in a while, feel free to bring it along. Someone will help you tweak it.
